Zombies and blogging – this book is geek heaven. Deadline is the second book in the Newsflesh Trilogy by Mira Grant.
*SPOILER ALERT* This book is the sequel to the best seller Feed. If you have not read Feed do not read any further!
Shaun Mason and his team are bloggers, reporting the news
after the zombie apocalypse. After his sister Georgia was killed on the campaign trail for the president, Shaun took over “The end of times”, the news blog they ran together.
Shaun is an Irwin (named after the late Steve Irwin) and would often have to fight off the undead for a news story. Now he’s trying to keep the business running and stop himself from going insane.
Dr.Kelly Connolly works for the CDC and needs Shauns help. Faking her own death she runs to The end of Times offices in Oakland and reveals the ongoing conspiracy of Kellis-Amberlee (the disease that caused The Rising).
But someone wants to stop Shaun from discovering the truth and after releasing a mob of infected people into the area, declares a major outbreak. Shaun and his team have to escape before Oakland is fire-bombed out of existence.
Feed is the first book in the newsflesh trilogy and introduces you to Shaun and Georgia Mason who now live post-rising. Deadline is the eagerly awaited sequel and carries forward the conspiracy surrounding Kellis-Amberlee.
Again Shaun is tasked with finding the truth but this time he without Georgia. Shaun is a hero but doesn’t want to be, he misses his sister and feels defeated by the events of the past, but still wants to avenge Georgia’s death and this is what drives him on.
Whilst the premise of Deadline may seem a little far fetched, Mira Grant has created a plausible reason for the dead not remaining that way. In fact it’s a scary not beyond the realm of possibility kind of plausible.
Mira Grant remains faithful to the zombie genre and often refers to the work of George A Romero. For the slightly geeky zombie fans in the world Deadline is a refreshing new take on the genre.
The last book in the trilogy, Blackout, which Mira Grant is currently in the process of writing won’t be released until May 2012. So, whilst you are waiting give this book a read and stock up your survival equipment ready for the zombie apocalypse.
